Introduction
When news in print media & programs in channels started appearing about "GEM technology" (developed for mosquito control), some colleagues used to request "sir, you should discover some way out on similar lines to destroy houseflies too". Those days what I used to tell them was that same thing (GEMT) can be utilised for housefly control as well. It was also explained to them that houseflies can be controlled by destroying the larvae hatched from the eggs laid by houseflies on decayed/decaying mango, jackfruit, fish, meat, food items etc spread in a wide-mouthed flat vessel. Naturally my colleagues neither liked nor accepted it, since it was targetting at the future generations and not the ones that cause problems currently. (Majority of people believe only what they see or experience, since they are incapable of visualising things). They expressed their disapproval/dislike of this method through their words, body language and facial expression.
Last two years severe housefly menace was experienced during home-village visits (Kottanelloor). Lot of discussion was there about the problem. My opinion, that the neglected tasteless and cheap mango and jack fruits getting dropped on ripening must have provided an ideal breeding ground for the houseflies, did not gain acceptance. The menace was more severe this time (June 2009). Hence decided to try deploying the trap that was designed against wrigglers (mosquito larvae) long ago, in a different way against houseflies. It was not only effective but also convincing as the flies were visibly getting trapped in front of them.
Trap construction, modus operandi
Cut an empty (disposable) mineral water bottle into two at about three-fourth (or two-third) height such that the top portion can be used as a funnel. Remove the cap.
At the bottom of the lower portion spread things such as ripe/rotten mango/jack fruit, pulp/skin of plantain/banana fruit, left outs of fish/meat, sugar, sweets, chocolates, food-remainings, etc (that attract houseflies) and keep where flies are present.
When a few of them (say 3 or 4) are already on the pray, keep the top portion of the bottle in an inverted position on the open part of the bottom piece.
With in a short while one can see that ALL the houseflies are inside the trap. Due to the funnel shape of the top piece, the flies cannot escape.
By this time lots of eggs laid by the early entrants also will be visible.
When all the flies (or majority of them) are trapped, fill it with water.
(Care may be taken to ensure that they do not come out when the water level reach/cross the mouth/neck.) In a short while they will become wet and incapable of flying or dead.
They may then be buried or burnt off.
Pour out the remaining water, replenish the attractants, AND the trap is ready for another round. (Sugar, chocolates, decayed things etc will be dissolved in water and lost there by. Hence those will have to be replaced.)
Conclusion
In the original malayalam (mother tongue of Kerala, India) version a proverb is quoted in conclusion. Since I don't know its equivalent in english, here comes its explanation:
We have a very oily snack called NEYYAPPAM. Neyy means ghee. The proverb means that eating it gives two benefits. Fill the belly & polish the moustache (with the oil that stichs to the fingers).
Similarly by using the use&throw bottle for this purpose gives two benefits: solves the housefly menace IN AN ECO-FRIENDLY MANNER AT ZERO COST and avoids environmental pollution caused by its indiscriminate disposal.

അന്നൊക്കെ അവരോട് പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നത് ഇതു തന്നെ ഈച്ചനിയന്ത്രണത്തിനും ഉപയോഗിക്കാം എന്നായിരുന്നു. ഈച്ചക്കു മുട്ടയിടുവാന്‍ അഴുകിയ/അഴുകാറായ മാങ്ങ, ചക്ക, മത്സ്യം, മാംസം, ഭക്ഷണം എന്നിവയുടെ അവശിഷ്ടം ഒരു പരന്ന പാത്രത്തില്‍ വച്ചു കൊടുക്കുകയും, ഈച്ചകള്‍ അവയിലിടുന്ന മുട്ടകള്‍ വിരിയുമ്പോള്‍ അവയെ നശിപ്പിക്കുകയും വഴി ഈച്ചശല്യം ഒഴിവാക്കുവാന്‍ സാധിക്കും എന്നു വിശദീകരിക്കുകയുംചെയ്തിരുന്നു. സ്വാഭാവികമായും വര്‍ത്തമാന സമയത്തു ശല്യപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ഈച്ചയെ നശിപ്പിക്കാതെ അവയുടെ ഭാവി തലമുറകളെ നശിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഈ മാര്‍ഗ്ഗം അവര്‍ക്കൊന്നും പഥ്യമായില്ലെന്നു അവരുടെ വാക്കും നോക്കും വെളിപ്പെടുത്തി (കാണുന്നതും അനുഭവിക്കുന്നതും മാത്രം വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നവരാണു അധികവും).
കഴിഞ്ഞ രണ്ടു വര്‍ഷം നാട്ടില്‍ (കൊറ്റനെല്ലൂര്‍) പോയപ്പോഴും അവിടെ ഭയങ്കര ഈച്ച ശല്യം അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടു. പലരും അതിനെക്കുറിച്ചു സംസാരിച്ചു. രുചിയും വിലയും കുറഞ്ഞ മാങ്ങ/ചക്ക ഇനങ്ങള്‍ പഴുത്തു വീഴുന്നതില്‍ ഈച്ചകള്‍ മുട്ടയിട്ടു പെരുകുന്നതാണെന്നു പറഞ്ഞത്, ആര്‍ക്കും ബോധ്യമായതായി തോന്നിയില്ല. ഇത്തവണ (6-10 ജൂണ്‍ 2009) ശല്യം വളരെ കൂടുതലായിരുന്നു. അതിനാല്‍ കൊതുകിന്‍ടെ കൂത്താടികളെ ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചു പണ്ട് രൂപപ്പെടുത്തിയ ഒരു കെണി വ്യത്യസ്ഥ രീതിയില്‍ ഈച്ചക്കെതിരെ പ്രയോഗിച്ചു. ഇതു വളരെ ഫലപ്രദമായി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു എന്നു മാത്രമല്ല കണ്‍മുന്‍പില്‍ ഈച്ചകള്‍ കെണിയില്‍ പെട്ടതുകൊണ്‍ട് എല്ലാവര്‍ക്കും അതു ബോധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
കെണി നിര്‍മ്മാണം, പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം
ധാതുജലത്തിന്‍ടെ (mineral water) കാലിക്കുപ്പി, മുകള്‍ഭാഗം ഒരു കുനില്‍ (ചോര്‍പ്പ്, ഉത്തരേന്ത്യക്കാര്‍ ത്രിവേന്ത്രപുരം എന്നു പറയുന്ന പപ്പനാഭന്‍ടെ നാട്ടിലെ വെച്ചുകുത്തി, FUNNEL) പോലെ ഉപയോഗിക്കാവുന്ന വിധത്തില്‍, മധ്യഭാഗത്തിനല്‍പ്പം മുകളിലായി രണ്‍ടായി മുറിക്കുക.
താഴത്തെ പകുതിയില്‍ ഈച്ചക്കു ഇഷ്ടമുള്ള സാധനങ്ങള്‍ (പഴുത്ത/ചീഞ്ഞ മാങ്ങ/ചക്ക, വാഴപ്പഴം/തൊലി, മത്സ്യ മാംസ അവശിഷ്ടം, പഞ്ചസാര, ശര്‍ക്കര, മിഠായി, ഭക്ഷണാവശിഷ്ടം) എന്തെങ്കിലും നിരത്തിയിട്ട് ഈച്ചയുള്ളിടത്തു വക്കുക.
രണ്‍ട് മൂന്ന് ഈച്ചകള്‍ ഇവയില്‍ എത്തിക്കഴിയുമ്പോള്‍ കുപ്പിയുടെ മുകള്‍ ഭാഗം തലകീഴായി താഴത്തെ കഷണത്തില്‍ വക്കുക.
ഏറെ വൈകാതെ പരിസരത്തെ ഈച്ചകളെല്ലാം കെണിക്കകത്താവുന്നത് കാണാം.
അവ ധാരാളം മുട്ട ഇട്ടതും കാണാം.
ഈച്ചകളെല്ലാം (അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും) കെണിയിലായാല്‍ അതിനകത്തേക്ക് വെള്ളം ഒഴിച്ചു നിറക്കുക.
അല്‍പ സമയത്തിനകം ഈച്ചകളെല്ലാം നനഞ്ഞ് പറക്കാന്‍ പറ്റാത്ത അവസ്ഥയിലാവുകയോ ചാകുകയോ ചെയ്യും.
അവയെ ഒരു ചെറു കുഴി കുഴിച്ച് അതിലിട്ടു മൂടുകയോ ചുട്ടു കളയുകയോ ചെയ്യാം.
കെണിയിലെ വെള്ളം ചരിച്ചു കളഞ്ഞ് ബാക്കി വരുന്ന സാധനങ്ങളില്‍ വേണ്‍ടത്ര സാധനങ്ങള്‍ കൂടി ഇട്ട് വീണ്‍ടും കെണി ഒരുക്കാം. പഞ്ചസാരയും, ശര്‍ക്കരയും, മിഠായിയും, അഴുകിയ സാധനങ്ങളും വെള്ളത്തില്‍ അലിഞ്ഞുപോകും എന്നതുകൊണ്‍ട് അവ വീണ്‍ടും ചേര്‍ക്കേണ്‍ടി വരും.
ഉപസംഹാരം
"നെയ്യപ്പം തിന്നാല്‍ രണ്‍ടുണ്‍ടു കാര്യം,
